Dear John,
Rumors are swirling that a breakthrough on the nuclear deal is close at hand.
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell indicated yesterday that Iran submitted a “reasonable” response to break the diplomatic impasse, and that he was expecting to convene the parties late last week to finalize the accord. However, the U.S. has taken its time, indicating that it is still studying the proposal and is in touch with the EU on the path forward.
With the deal hanging in the balance, there is a flurry of activity aimed at influencing Biden. This includes a call between Biden and the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany over the weekend in favor of the deal and public calls today from Israeli leaders urging Biden not to rejoin the agreement.
Opponents of the JCPOA are now working overtime to misconstrue the terms and spin up opposition to the deal. Many of those voices are the exact same people who have urged Biden to turn away from the negotiating table and bomb Iran. We can’t let them win.
If a deal is finalized, Iran negotiations will once again be at the forefront of Washington’s daily political battles. Votes to block urgently-needed sanctions relief will force legislators to take a side, as hawks churn out propaganda to try to block a deal.
At NIAC, we will continue to champion the cause of peace, diplomacy, and sanctions relief that can benefit the people of Iran. We hope you will join us and help us win the fight, just like we did in 2015.
