The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is required to develop a recovery plan for species protected under the Endangered Species Act.
But the plans the Service developed for wolves don't cover most of the places where wolves could be restored. They don't even cover all the areas wolves currently occupy.
That's why there needs to be a national recovery plan that takes into account all potential wolf habitat and populations. So, today, we let the Service know we intend to sue.
Wolves throughout most of the lower 48 states are listed as protected under the Act, but simply being listed isn't enough. Our vision for wolves is bigger.
If this keystone species is going to have a real future — one where wolf families flourish for generations to come — they must have a national recovery plan.
Today wolves are centered in the northern Rockies and Great Lakes. But we know wolves can thrive nationwide.
Earlier this year pups were confirmed in two packs in Northern California.
And there's recent evidence wolves have been present just 120 miles from New York City.
We've taken three legal actions in the past two weeks to protect wolves from being persecuted.
But living during a heartbreaking extinction crisis calls for something more. The current moment demands those who cherish life on Earth to unapologetically stake a claim for the wild.
We envision wolves roaming safely throughout their natural habitat, with active federal recovery programs in place, and that vision applies to all species at risk.
For wolves, that starts with our legal action today to force the federal government to also see that vision and act on it.
