We're working hard to defeat legalization nationwide Dear John, I want to take a second to update you on the pro-legalization ballot initiatives SAM and our allies are working to defeat in Arkansas, Missouri, and South Dakota. First, in Arkansas, SAM allies filed a petition to the Arkansas Supreme Court asking the court to uphold the Arkansas Board of Electors’ rejection of the marijuana legalization ballot measure. To support this effort, I submitted an affidavit testifying to the harms of high-THC marijuana, which causes many different types of mental and physiological health problems, especially in children and pregnant women. In Missouri, SAM allies filed a petition to block the state’s legalization ballot measure, arguing that it was improperly certified by the Missouri Secretary of State. SAM Executive Vice President, Luke Niforatos, with his new SAM sister organization, Protect Our Kids, has been leading the effort along with a longtime friend of SAM. In South Dakota, Protect Our Kids is mobilizing a diverse ballot committee to oppose the ballot measure to legalize home growing and possession of marijuana. After almost a decade of leading SAM, I know just how hard legalization advocates will push these measures. For the well-being of our communities and families, we must fight back harder. We know that marijuana legalization is not about compassionate palliative care like the medical advocates claim or keeping prisons free of those suffering with substance misuse. Legalization is about giving a greedy addiction-for-profit industry influence in more and more states. We will continue to fight these efforts in every state because for us, this is something worth fighting for. Thank you for all of your hard work and efforts to help us defeat legalization. Sincerely, Dr. Kevin Sabet President & CEO Smart Approaches to Marijuana About SAM Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) is an alliance of organizations and individuals dedicated to a health-first approach to marijuana policy.
