There’s been a lot of attention paid recently to the ways legislators, secretaries of state and local elections administrators could subvert democracy. But governors have important roles to play, too, with vocal election deniers running for chief executive in Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania. It would be a mistake, however, to only focus on the risk posed by Republican election deniers. |
In my latest piece, “Republican Governors Are a Threat to Democracy,” I highlight the ways Republican governors like Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp undermine the will of the voters. While more subtle than the antics of election deniers, these steps can just as easily deny voters the ability to elect the candidates of their choice. We certainly can’t count on election deniers, but we shouldn’t count on voter suppressors like Kemp either. We can’t let governors like him fall into the shadows as election deniers get the spotlight.
