Dr. Fauci Announces He Will Leave Public Service in December

New York Times: Dr. Anthony S. Fauci said on Monday that he intended to leave government service in December to “pursue the next chapter” of his career, and that he would step down as President Biden’s top medical adviser and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which he has led for 38 years. The announcement by Dr. Fauci, 81, was not entirely unexpected. He has hinted for some time that he was thinking of retiring. In an interview Sunday evening, he said he was “not retiring in the classic sense” but would devote himself to traveling, writing and encouraging young people to enter government service (New York Times). Rand Paul: Fauci’s resignation will not prevent a full-throated investigation into the origins of the pandemic. He will be asked to testify under oath regarding any discussions he participated in concerning the lab leak (Twitter). Dr. Jay Bhattacharya: My statement on Dr. Fauci’s retirement announcement (Twitter).

Judge Who Authorized Warrant for Trump Raid Declines DOJ’s Request to Keep Affidavit Sealed

Townhall: A federal judge formally rejected the Department of Justice’s request to keep the affidavit that led to the FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago sealed due to “the intense public and historical interest in an unprecedented search of a former President’s residence.” The Biden administration argued “the present record justifies keeping the entire Affidavit under seal,” but Judge Bruce Reinhart, who cleared the initial search warrant, said in a 13-page ruling issued Monday that the government had not given a strong enough argument for that request (Townhall). Kyle Cheney: Magistrate Judge Reinhart has filed a written order memorializing his decision to consider unsealing portions of the Mar-a-Lago affidavit (Twitter). Politico: The Justice Department is due to propose potential redactions by Thursday, portending a potentially lengthy process of negotiation with Reinhart and possible appeals… Reinhart also rejected the contention that unsealing aspects of the affidavit would set a dangerous precedent, given the singular, historic significance of this case (Politico).

Trump Files Lawsuit Seeking Special Master to Examine Evidence Taken During FBI Raid

Washington Examiner: Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit demanding the appointment of a special master to independently review any evidence the FBI seized from him as he pushes back against the unprecedented raid of Mar-a-Lago. Trump filed the motion on Monday seeking an order from a judge which would appoint a special master, and which would stop the Justice Department from further review of the information they had seized from his Florida resort home until the special master is appointed. Trump also asked the judge to require DOJ to provide a more detailed receipt for the property it had seized from him, and to order federal investigators to return all items to him which had been taken but were outside the search warrant’s scope (Washington Examiner). Politico: Trump’s attorneys said they were informed by a prosecutor that a Justice Department “filter team” is reviewing the seized records to cull out any privileged materials, but the Trump lawyers contend that safeguard isn’t sufficient (Politico).

President of American Federation of Teachers Retweets Fake List of Banned Books

Daily Caller: Weingarten tweeted out a fake list of “Florida’s Anti-Woke banned book list” on Sunday with the caption, “books we have taught for generations!!!!,” according to a screenshot of the now deleted tweet. Weingarten tweeted out an apology after realizing the list is made up, saying she “should have double checked before I retweeted this list. My bad” (Daily Caller). Frank Luntz: That list is fake, Randi. Notice that there’s no link to a source for it (Twitter). Fox News: Gov. Ron DeSantis’, R-Fla., press secretary Bryan Griffin, responded to a different tweet posted by “A Worried Citizen,” which said, “Florida bans the Pulitzer Prize winning novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird.'” Griffin said the claim was “completely false” (Fox News).

Ford Slashes 3,000 Jobs in Transition to EVs

Wall Street Journal: Ford Motor Co. confirmed Monday it is laying off roughly 3,000 white-collar and contract employees, marking the latest in its efforts to slash costs as it makes a longer-range transition to electric vehicles. Ford sent an internal email Monday to employees, saying it would begin notifying affected salaried and agency workers this week of the cuts. The workforce reduction mostly targets employees in the U.S., Canada and India. About 2,000 of the targeted cuts will be salaried jobs at the Dearborn, Mich., auto maker. The remaining 1,000 employees are working in contract positions with outside agencies, the company said (Wall Street Journal). CNBC: The reductions are occurring across Ford’s businesses, which it split into two units earlier this year to separate its electric and internal combustion engine businesses. “There are opportunities to be more efficient and more effective in all the business units and all the functions that support them,” Ford spokesman T.R. Reid told CNBC. Ford employs about 31,000 salaried workers in North America. As of the end of last year, Ford had 186,769 employees globally, with 90,873, or 48.7%, of those workers located in the U.S. (CNBC).

Australian Bank Plans to Halt Loans for Gas Vehicles by 2025

CNBC: An Australian bank plans to stop giving loans for new diesel and gasoline cars as the country tries to encourage the use of electric vehicles and catch up with other developed countries. In a statement Friday, Bank Australia said it would scrap loans for new fossil fuel vehicles from 2025. While there will be no more loans for new combustion engine vehicles — including hybrids — from 2025, Bank Australia will continue to provide them for used ones (CNBC). Daily Mail: Its chief impact officer Sasha Courville told the National Electric Vehicle Summit in Canberra on Friday the bank’s new policy was ‘an important step in decarbonizing the Australian economy’. ‘By ceasing car loans for new fossil fuel vehicles, we are sending a signal to the Australian market about the rapid acceleration in the transition from internal combustion to electric vehicles we expect to see in the next few years,’ she said (Daily Mail).

NYT Reporters Claim Constitution is Broken, Not Worthy of Being Reclaimed

We the Ivy League people despise America’s founding documents. RedState: In a Friday Times essay, two Ivy League professors declared the “broken” and “famously undemocratic” U.S. Constitution “stands in the way” of “real” freedom and democracy, while issuing a call to “radically alter the basic rules of the game” by no longer requiring us to “justify our politics by the Constitution” (RedState). Fox News: According to Dr. Ryan D. Doerfler and Dr. Samuel Moyn, the solution is not to “reclaim” the Constitution from Republicans, but rather reclaim America from constitutionalism (Fox News). Rasmussen: Despite their generally favorable opinion of the Constitution, however, 57% of Democratic voters agree it “is a document rooted in racism,” and 64% think the Constitution ”is a sexist document that gives men advantages over women.” Nearly half (49%) of Democrats believe the Constitution “should be mostly or completely rewritten.” The rest of the electorate overwhelmingly rejects all these statements (Rasmussen).

Stock Market Down Two Percent in Steepest Decline Since June

Wall Street Journal: Fears of additional sharp interest-rate increases by the Federal Reserve sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 643 points on Monday, taking some of the wind out of this summer’s stock-market rally. The market’s outlook also remains highly uncertain as investors weigh positive news—such as strong job growth—against worries that Fed tightening could tip the economy into recession (Wall Street Journal). Financial Times: The Fed has already lifted interest rates three times this year in a bid to bring down inflation from 40-year highs, but officials have stressed the central bank has further to go. Although Monday’s stock market declines appeared to contrast with a strong rally so far in the third quarter, investors have warned that the earlier gains were not evidence of an increase in investor optimism after a dreadful start to the year (Financial Times).

Life Evaluation Index: “Suffering” at Highest Level Since Measurement Began in 2008

Feeling low is at a record high. Gallup: The percentage of Americans who evaluate their lives poorly enough to be considered “suffering” on Gallup’s Life Evaluation Index was 5.6% in July, the highest since the index’s inception in 2008. This exceeds the previous high of 4.8% measured in April and is statistically higher than all prior estimates in the COVID-19 era. Across extensive measurement since January 2008, the suffering percentage has reached 4.5% or higher on a handful of occasions (Gallup). Axios: The percentage of U.S. adults classified as “thriving” has declined steadily since it reached a record high of 59.2% in June 2021. July’s estimate of 51.2% adults classified as “thriving” is an 18-month low (Axios).
