We're asking once again--urgently--that you keep pressure up on BOTH of your Senators to support the Respect for Marriage Act. One call per week to BOTH of your Senators can make a huge difference to getting this critical legislation over the finish line, passed in the Senate and signed into law by President Biden.

We also have important ways to be an advocate to stop the spread of monkeypox in your community; sharing reliable information is key to stopping the spread.

Support

Support for LGBTQ+ youth via imi.guide!

With the return to school in full swing, LGBTQ+ youth are undoubtedly feeling the pressure. Mental health IS health and, to that end, we want to remind you about imi.

imi (sounds like eye-me) is a free, digital, research-backed mental health tool made with and for LGBTQ+ teens. imi supports and helps LGBTQ+ teens explore and affirm their identity and learn practical ways to cope with stress, providing space for LGBTQ+ teens, especially QTBIPOC, and those with multiple marginalized identities to feel seen and supported.

imi was created through a collaboration of LGBTQ+ organizations, and hundreds of LGBTQ+ young people from across the country--it’s a tool for LGBTQ+ teens, by LGBTQ+ teens and their allies.

Tools like imi are needed now, more than ever, to address elements contributing to the growing mental health crisis affecting LGBTQ+ youth by providing them with free, accessible, and research-backed support, built in a safe digital space.

Three Steps to Being a Better Advocate in the Fight Against Monkeypox (MPX/MPV

  1. LearnRead PFLAG’s statement about MPX to catch up on some basic facts about the virus and learn about what policies we’re calling for to improve the situation. Stay up to date on news about MPX at pflag.org/MPS, our MPX informational page that includes links to the WHO and other organizations.
  2. Watch: Check out our recent Something To Talk About Live! episode with Dr. Julia Fleming and Antón Castellanos Usigli, MPH, talking about MPX and what we need to know. The CDC also has a playlist of videos about MPX on their Youtube channel.
  3. Share: Remember to vet everything you read on social media and do your best to avoid misinformation. Follow trusted public health authorities, such as the WHO, the CDC, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID).

Advocacy

We Must Keep the Pressure On: Tell your Senators to Vote for the Respect for Marriage Act!

Tell your Senators TODAY to support the Respect for Marriage Act. (And set a reminder to keep telling them!) Folks who don't believe LGBTQ+ people should have rights are flooding Senate phone lines with their ugly rhetoric. In fact, they're doing that at every level of office.

PFLAGers, don't let their voices be the only ones lawmakers hear! No matter WHO your Senators are, tell them to support the Respect for Marriage Act to repeal DOMA and codify into law that couples of the same gender or of different races have the freedom to marry.

Tell your Senators TODAY to vote on the side of love and support the Respect for Marriage Act.

Something to Talk About...Live!

Title IX, 50 Years Later

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” And what that means and how it should be implemented has been up for debate since then.

Join us this Thursday, August 25 at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live! where we will be discussing “USDA says religious schools will be granted automatic Title IX exemption", which appeared in the The Hill by Brooke Migdon. We're excited to welcome Shiwali Patel, Director of Justice for Student Survivors & Senior Counsel, National Women’s Law Center to the conversation!

Mark your calendar for Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, August 18 at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT on FacebookYouTubeTwitter, and LinkedIn.
