Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Lisa Filipy. (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .)

Congratulations to Lisa for correctly identifying the False Milkweed Bug (Lygaeus turcicus). The sunflower was one clue - this species primarily feeds on sunflowers and other asters, not milkweed like the small milkweed bug that they mimic. Another clue to identify them is to look for a v shape in parenthesis on their back instead of the heart shape a small milkweed bug has. This article from Birds Outside My Window ([link removed]) has a good close-up comparison of the two species.
