Of all the dangerous, conspiracy-mongering candidates on the ballot this November, there’s one group that poses a particular threat to our democracy: The ‘Big Lie’ election deniers running to take over the offices that oversee our elections.
Here’s the story: In most states, an elected official, often the secretary of state, oversees elections, counts votes, and declares who wins. Historically, these offices have been filled by low-key public
administrators who go quietly about their business and rarely attract media attention.
But now, pro-Trump election deniers who still claim that he won the 2020 presidential election are running to take over these critical positions in key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Michigan. If they win, they will undoubtedly use their authority to throw out votes and declare Trump the winner in 2024—just like Trump tried to do in 2020.
In the past, Common Dreams hasn’t paid a lot of attention to races for secretary of state, and neither have voters. This year, that needs to change. We’re sounding the alarm to alert voters about what’s at stake in these
elections so they can make an informed choice.
