We need to talk about the corporate media and the truly awful job they are doing in covering politics today, both in the U.S. and around the world.
In the States, we have an entire political party that has completely surrendered to the forces of authoritarianism. They don’t believe in democracy. They celebrate violent insurrection as “legitimate political discourse.”
And yet the corporate media remains stuck in old ideas about “objective”
journalism that treats “both sides” as equally valid. These false equivalences only serve to elevate the antidemocratic forces of the election deniers and insurrectionists.
Common Dreams long ago recognized the mortal threat our democracy is facing, and we’re committed to providing news that will inform, inspire, and ignite action to defend democracy.
But in this perilous moment, it has become more difficult than ever to fund and operate an online nonprofit news outlet. Big Tech giants like Google and Facebook have an ever tighter grip on the internet, controlling massive amounts of traffic through their news feeds and search results.
We’ve seen our traffic from Facebook and Google fall off a cliff, and less traffic means fewer readers and fewer donations.
