Cheney—a staunch conservative whose only deviation from party orthodoxy
was that she refused to repeat Donald Trump's Big Lie that the 2020
election was stolen—and an election denier who calls Trump "the greatest
president of my lifetime."^1
Liz Cheney lost by 37 points.^2

After the FBI raided Donald Trump's home to recover stolen top-secret
national security documents, Trump's support among Republican voters for
the 2024 presidential nomination actually went up ... to the highest
number ever recorded.^3
In the words of Robert Reich, "The political struggle of our time is no
longer left versus right, Democrat versus Republican. It is democracy
versus authoritarianism."^4
This is a fight we must win. That's why MoveOn has committed $30 million
to our 2022 midterm campaign—the largest midterm campaign in our 23-year
history.
We're using that money to run the same tried-and-true campaign tactics
that helped beat Trump in 2020, including on-the-ground organizers to get
out the vote and hard-hitting internet and TV ads to reach undecided swing
voters. We've also spent the last year innovating new, cutting-edge
tactics that will allow us to remain one step ahead of our opposition,
just as MoveOn has so many times in the past.

While Republicans continue down the dark and dangerous path of Trump's
authoritarianism, we have gotten news recently showing that we have a real
shot at defying history and stopping Republicans from taking control of
Congress.
First, President Biden just scored the most impressive run of legislative
victories of any president in a decade or more, passing landmark
legislation on climate change, prescription drugs, gun safety, veterans'
health care, and more.^5 Meanwhile, gas prices are declining, jobs are
booming, and the rise in inflation has significantly slowed.^6
And the end of Roe v. Wade and the wave of abortion bans going into effect
across the country are triggering a backlash, demonstrated by the
landslide victory for abortion rights on the ballot in Kansas, a state
Trump won by 15 points in 2020.
All of this news is translating to a dramatic shift in Democrats'
prospects in the midterm elections.
In early June, Republicans were on track to win 51 seats and a majority in
the Senate. Now, Democrats have pulled ahead in enough places that the
polls say they would likely gain seats if the election were held today.^7
Because of gerrymandering, the House of Representatives will be more
difficult for Democrats. But even there, if you ignore the pundits and
just look at the available polling data, Democrats have a 1 in 3 chance of
holding their majority, according to the data-only polling model by the
experts at FiveThirtyEight.^8
And that's before we even start the biggest phases of our campaign, which
won't begin in earnest until after Labor Day.
With your help, MoveOn will be able to invest in ads on TV and digital
platforms, driving the most effective messaging to persuade the exact
voters we need to win and fire up Democrats across the board. We're
organizing phone banks and texting campaigns to remind voters who might
not otherwise bother voting in a midterm.
These are tactics we know from testing can have a measurable impact on
election outcomes, but as a grassroots membership organization, we rely on
donations from everyday people like you. Instead of one super-rich
billionaire writing a huge check, we're able to take on Trump and the
Republicans by collecting tens of thousands of donations of $10, $20, and
$50 each.
