John -
As I was drinking my tea this morning, I caught myself thinking back to my race for Chief Justice in 2020 and all that I’ve learned about what it takes to win statewide in North Carolina. I want to share a bit about my journey in public service and why I’m so grateful for your support.
My mom taught me growing up to always give back and serve others. It’s what drove me to become a public defender when I graduated from law school, but back then, I never imagined that I’d be on the other side of the bench. I had never seen an African American woman presiding over a courtroom until I was a practicing lawyer, and it really shifted my perspective on what was possible.
In my campaign for district judge, my opponent went around telling everyone that a mom like me couldn’t win. So I grabbed the diaper bag and knocked on as many doors as I could. I won by 30 points. From there, I went on to win two statewide races before becoming the first African American woman to serve as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
My race for Chief Justice in 2020 was ultimately decided by 401 votes — out of over 5 million. That’s just how close these races in North Carolina can be, and there’s a real chance that this one comes down to a similar margin in November.
When the days feel long or the challenges feel steep, I think about those 401 votes. And I remind myself that I refuse to wake up with any regrets on November 9. I will do everything I can today, right now, to make sure that we flip this seat.
Every decision, every door knock and every dollar matters. That’s why I’m so grateful for everyone who has pitched in their time and talent already. But it’s going to take all of us, so I’m asking:
This is going to be a tough race — one of the closest in the country. But together, there’s no doubt that we will have the grassroots strength it takes to win!
Thank you for your support,
Cheri
