One of the best parts of summer in Western NC is watching our kids experience it all. From tromping through the woods on a hike to learning to swim in a mountain lake to the twins being on Bear Patrol every morning to see if we’ve had any early morning visits from our black bear neighbors.

On the best days, Meghann fires up the smoker for her famous ribs and BBQ and we finish out the night making s’mores over the fire. Growing up, my mom would take me to the mountains to visit family and go camping. It made a big impression and when I moved back in my twenties, it was because the mountains felt like home.

It was the beauty, yes, but it was also the people and way people treat each other – looking out for each other, having each other’s back, believing we all deserve the freedom to be who we are. It’s because I care so much about our district and the people in it that I’m running for Congress.

I’ve watched my home be misrepresented by political extremists for almost a decade, and I can’t stand to see it happen again. That’s what’s on the line in this race – a stark choice between me and my extremist opponent.

My opponent Chuck Edwards is a multi-millionaire businessman who cares more about corporations than working-class North Carolinians. As a state Senator, he admitted that his mission in Raleigh was to prioritize the interests of businesses – and he has a long track record of not looking out for working families and instead making sure that the wealthiest stay at the front of the line.

Unlike Edwards, I don’t accept a dime of corporate PAC money because I’m funding this campaign the right way – from grassroots supporters like you.

I’ve been campaigning across the district all summer, knocking doors from the banks of the French Broad River in Marshall to the Shiloh neighborhood of Asheville. And here’s what’s really clear: voters are fired up and ready for change.

They are sick and tired of division and they know exactly what’s on the line: from their fundamental freedoms to the future of our country.
