What the IRA means for the climate: [link removed]

After decades of hard work from advocates, policymakers, and activists pushing for legislation to address climate change, President Biden has signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law. Finally, we have legislation that begins to match spending with the true scale of the climate crisis, and we now have a path to just-in-time climate solutions.

The Inflation Reduction Act will make it possible to rapidly expand our clean energy economy, and lay the groundwork for making the fossil fuel industry obsolete. In concert with ambitious executive action by the Biden Administration, the IRA will enable the U.S. to achieve 50% emissions reductions by 2030, as the science demands and the President has promised.

The IRA promises to unlock the progress that we must see over the next decade, and Earthjustice will be working relentlessly in all the forums where decisions on energy and spending are made. The legislation also contains dangerous giveaways to the fossil fuel industry that could perpetuate fossil dependence and lock in deadly pollution, especially in communities in the Gulf of Mexico, Appalachia, and Alaska. We cannot hope to meet climate imperatives and achieve a just and equitable transition to clean energy so long as communities are consigned to a fossil future.

Earthjustice is doubling down on our fights to stop fossil fuels extraction and development, and we are now staffing up our new Gulf Office so that we can better support our partners in fights to come. We will never relent when it comes to defending and strengthening environmental protections and bringing them to bear in service of our clients.

The Inflation Reduction Act is just the beginning. We’re still in the fight of our lives with BIG work ahead. I’m inexpressably grateful to see a path today that wasn’t there yesterday. We have an opportunity to build out the clean energy infrastructure of the future with the guardrails in place to protect the places and communities most impacted by energy production and transition. It will take enormous work to get this massive funding where it needs to go, especially to the communities where fossil fuels are most entrenched. It won’t be easy but Earthjustice is beyond ready for the opportunities the IRA has created.
