Weekend Reading
Dear John,
This week, the Israeli military shut down the offices of several Palestinian rights organizations. Today the U.S. must speak out against Israel’s attempts to silence those who have exposed the government’s human rights abuses. If you haven’t already, please contact your representative today. This follows a three-day attack on Gaza earlier this month, which killed dozens of people. AFSC staff members Serena Awad and Ali Abdalbari were there. In this interview, they discuss their experiences and how Palestinians in Gaza came together to support each other. Read more. [link removed]

New book from AFSC: “Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire”: [link removed] For 16 years, Palestinians in Gaza have lived under a brutal blockade. Our new book features essays and poems by 12 Palestinian writers on what the future of Gaza could be. The New York Times [link removed] recently highlighted “Light in Gaza,” writing that the “searing collection anthologizes works by Palestinians from Gaza — some residents, some refugees — describing their lives under occupation and amid the ongoing struggle for freedom.” Get your copy today [link removed] .
Incarcerating parents punishes families: [link removed] There are more than a million children in the U.S. with a parent in prison. That has lasting effects on a child, including increasing the likelihood the child will get involved in the criminal legal system themselves. Protecting the children of incarcerated parents requires rethinking punishment in the U.S., says AFSC’s Bonnie Kerness. (New Jersey Monitor)
Register for our webinar series: Understanding Restorative Justice (Sept. 6, 13, 20, at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT): [link removed] Restorative justice is based on the philosophy that we are all interconnected, that we live in relationship with one another, and that our actions impact each other. This September, AFSC is offering a three-session webinar series on restorative justice as part of our Community Safety Beyond Policing trainings. Participants will develop an understanding of restorative justice and its practices—and how to strengthen our communities through accountability.
