Dear Friend,
In celebration of the end of 2019, we are proud to share ALIGN’s 12 big victories that were only possible because of supporters like you.
In honor of those 12 victories, we need 12 more sustainers before the end of this year who can help us continue to do our work.
Friend, will you join us fight for worker and climate justice and commit to becoming one of those monthly sustainers?
Twelve Victories of 2019
1. Alongside the Climate Works for All coalition, we fought and succeeded in the passage of the groundbreaking Climate Mobilization Act, the first-of-its-kind legislation that will slash emissions from large buildings by 80 percent by 2050, and create 20,000 energy efficiency jobs annually through 2030.
2. After a six-year long fight, ALIGN and the Transform Don’t Trash NYC coalition passed the Commercial Waste Zones law which will transform the Wild West private sanitation industry to a model that ends “race to the bottom” wages, protects workers, and slashes truck emissions and air pollution. A big win for workers, communities of color, and the environment.
3. With the NY Renews Coalition, we passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act as the nation's leading model that sets the state’s goal of achieving 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2040.
4. We joined a grassroots movement that kept Amazon HQ2 out of Long Island City, which would have cost our city and state billions of dollars in undeserved tax credits to a corporation that makes huge profit margins while exploiting its workers.
5. ALIGN came together with transit activists for the #fixthesubways campaign, demanding that the Governor invest in a mass transit system that millions of New Yorkers depend on every day. After years of advocacy, we helped pass a congestion pricing bill in 2019, which will funnel billions of dollars into repairing and improving our public transit infrastructure.
6. A year after a wheel flew off a private sanitation truck and killed a driver in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, our Transform don’t Trash NYC coalition alongside environmental and street safety advocates to criticize the unsafe operations of private carting industries and called for the now passed Commercial Waste Zones law.
7. On Amazon’s Prime Day, we marched to Jeff Bezos’ home to rally against Amazon’s working conditions, their impact on the environment, and the company’s ties with ICE & CBP in their campaign to abuse migrants.
8. We celebrated twenty-four years of supporting communities across New York with our Movement Builders Awards to honor the incredible national and local organizations and leaders that made significant contributions towards economic, racial, and climate justice. This year we were proud to be honoring George Miranda, President of Teamsters Joint Council 16, Maurice Mitchell, National Director of the Working Families Party, and the Sunrise Movement.
9. We joined hundreds of protesters who were demanding Amazon to cut ties with ICE and shut down 11th Avenue outside the Javits Center where Amazon Web Services was holding its annual summit.
10. We went up to Albany with the New York Renews coalition and occupied the State Capitol in act of civil disobedience, demanding Governor Cuomo to take on our current climate crisis and sign the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
11. We welcomed Teamsters Joint Council 16 and AFCSME District Council 37 to the board of ALIGN.
12. ALIGN joined a delegation with our national partners to visit Barcelona en Comu and learned from their victories on tenants organizing, public energy, urban development, and cooperative models.
In honor of these 12 victories, will you become one of our 12 Sustainers of ALIGN that commits a monthly contribution of $10, $15, or $20 to our cause? Any amount that you are able to give is immensely appreciated.
In solidarity,
Maritza Silva-Farrell and the ALIGN Team
