88th Annual Omak Stampede Last weekend, I attended the Omak Stampede which had the largest crowd in its 88 year history! Congressman Westerman from the state of Arkansas joined me to see how we have a good time in Central Washington. The Stampede did not disappoint, and we were honored to see this year's King of the Hill, Mane Pakootas. Congratulations to all the participants! Fish Release Ceremony I was honored to participate in a fish release ceremony at Rufus Woods Lake last weekend with leaders from the Colville Tribes, Spokane Tribe of Indians, Chehalis Tribe, and Swinomish Tribe as well as Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Bruce Westerman (R-AR). By tagging and tracking the salmon, we can continue to recover this important species throughout the region. Our Dams are Essential to Our Way of Life in Central Washington Here in Central Washington, the Four Lower Snake River Dams provide so much for us. From carbon-free energy, flood control, irrigation, transportation, and recreation, these dams are critical to our way of life. I will continue to fight every day in Congress to protect our dams—while I am in Congress, they will not be breached. Western Caucus Field Tour in Montana As Chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus, I lead almost 80 Members of Congress to advance commonsense agriculture, energy, natural resources, and public lands policies. This week, I visited Montana with fellow Western Caucus members to learn about their way of life and collaboration with local, state, and federal officials so we can better advocate for rural communities across the country. I hosted a roundtable with my fellow Western Caucus members to hear from state and national officials about forestry, endangered species, agriculture, and local conservation efforts. We visited the Bozeman Municipal Watershed Project in the Custer Gallatin National Forest to learn how the U.S. Forest Service works with the city and local partners to manage the forests surrounding the projects. The Bozeman Municipal Watershed Project reduces the severity of wildfires, creates safer conditions for wildland firefighters, and increases water supply for one of the fastest growing communities in the West. We spent some time at Montana State University to learn from the students and teachers about their work with barley, wheat, potatoes, and apples to support producers in Montana and across the world! Our field tour concluded with a visit to Yellowstone National Park, as the country celebrates its 150th anniversary, to see how the recent historic flooding has devastated the gateway communities alongside the nation’s first national park. We heard from Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Cam Sholly about how we can work in Congress to support communities like Gardiner—that rely on tourist revenue from National Park visitors and whose infrastructure was destroyed by the floods—to recover from natural disasters. Be Prepared: Wildfire Resource Kit The catastrophic wildfires facing our region are—unfortunately—something we have come to expect during the dry, summer months. That said, I encourage you to continue to take caution to protect your families, homes, businesses, and communities. I am working in Congress to ensure our region receives the federal assistance we need to fight and manage these wildfires.
