I’m living proof that when Americans are there, the world is safer.

I was in Kabul, Afghanistan one year ago this week when the Taliban took over
my country. My family and I relocated to my uncle’s house the day after the
Taliban took over to hide from them in case they looked for us, particularly me.

A week after the government’s collapse, I along with my brother and his wife
headed to Kabul Airport to leave the country, but it was much harder than we
had imagined. The airport was crowded and the Taliban were cruel. I witnessed
people, including my own brother and friend, being beaten by them. I also had a
gun held to my head and it was clear they would have killed me had I not
listened to their commands.

I was outside Kabul Airport trying to get through the gate when I connected
with Esther Joy King,who is now running as a Republican for Congress in
Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.

With Esther’s help and coordination, a group of U.S. Marines picked us up
after we spent a day in the airport and drove us to the terminal around 4 am.
In a few hours, we got into flight lines for the U.S. and we were able to
escape the country.

There is no doubt in my mind: Esther Joy King saved my life. Thanks to her I
am free to start my new life in the United States.
