Earlier this month, despite the saber-rattling of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and its Chinese Communist Party (CCP), I traveled to Taiwan, along with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and four of our congressional colleagues, to strengthen our crucial economic and security partnerships with Taiwan and show our support for its thriving democracy. In light of the brutal, illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine, it’s even more important that we stand behind Taiwan in the face of growing aggression by the CCP towards the democratic, self-governing island, which experiences daily cyberattacks launched by China and increasing incursions into Taiwanese air space by the CCP military aircraft.
The threats by China toward Taiwan bear significant implications for America’s economy and national security too. Taiwan produces about half the world’s supply of microchips, and any interference in manufacturing by China could significantly impact the American economy. Fortunately, through the incentives of the recently passed bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which I was proud to support, two of Taiwan’s largest chipmakers have committed $17 billion to build or expand facilities in the U.S., securing our supply lines.
Democracies must stand with together in the face of increasingly militaristic authoritarian regimes like those in Moscow and Beijing. You can read more about the importance of our Taiwan trip for the broader effort to take on the Chinese Communist Party in my recent Chicago Tribune op-ed.
