Weekly Wrap Up Friend, I am in the business of customer service. We have three offices throughout the district that are focused on helping Iowans navigate issues with the federal government — from troubles with the IRS, to helping with visa and passport issues, to assistance with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. People might not immediately think of calling their Congresswoman if they are waiting on a check from the IRS or aren’t getting the right amount in Social Security benefits, but if you’re having trouble with a federal agency, please give us a call. I’m proud of the results we’ve delivered for Iowans who have reached out to us after feeling like they had hit a dead end. We have helped veterans receive missing service medals, ensured seniors are receiving their full Social Security benefits, and worked to get late tax returns processed. Iowans don’t have time to navigate the confusing bureaucracy and the red tape at federal agencies. That’s where we come in — we are ready to help! Click here for our contact information. Best, Iowa State Fair The Iowa State Fair is a summertime staple! I had a blast catching up with so many Iowans and enjoying all the great food the fair has to offer. Nothing compares to fair season here in Iowa! Inflation is Soaring Inflation remains at a 40-year high of 8.5%. The cost of goods and services families need are soaring. Over the past year, the cost of eggs are up 38%, flour is up 22.7%, coffee is up 20.3%, cereal is up 17.6%, bread is up 13.7%, and bacon is up 11.7%. The cost of gasoline is up 44%! Families across Iowa are feeling the pinch on their budgets to make ends meet. These steep prices are forcing folks to put regular grocery and gas runs on credit cards. As a result, credit card debt is increasing at the fastest rate in more than 20 years. Inflation isn’t transitory, and it isn’t a temporary problem – it is threatening the long-term financial security of families across the country. Despite this, President Biden signed legislation this week that would increase, not decrease, inflation. I’ll continue to push back against reckless spending and other harmful policies while pushing for solutions to make your daily life more affordable. From advocating for an all-of-the-above energy strategy to cutting costly government regulations that cause supply chain bottlenecks, I'll continue working on commonsense policies that will ensure our economy is working for everyone again. Border Update Our open border is a national security crisis. Since President Biden took office, there have been over 3.2 million illegal immigrant encounters at our Southern Border -- more than the population of Iowa. In July alone, Border Patrol agents caught 10 terror suspects trying to come into our country. While I’m grateful for their work, this still leaves a pit in my stomach: how many dangerous people were able to escape detection and make it across our border? Enough is enough. It’s time for President Biden to prioritize border security.
