Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Homeowners and potential homeowners, there are two important upcoming dates we want you to know about: September 30 and October 1.

In June,?we launched a $50 million Homeowner Assistance Fund [ [link removed] ] to help homeowners who fell on hard times during COVID-19. The program can help?you cover mortgage payments, condo fees, housing expenses, missed utility payments, internet payments, insurance, and more.?But it is?important that homeowners don?t wait to apply. On September 30, the?District?s foreclosure moratorium will end; however, if you apply for the Homeowner Assistance Fund by September 30, you can get protection from foreclosure. So, if you are behind on your mortgage payments or bills, go to haf.dc.gov [ [link removed] ] to learn more about eligibility and to apply for the Homeowner Assistance Fund.?

Additionally, for residents who are considering becoming homeowners, beginning?October 1,?the maximum assistance that residents can receive through the Home Purchase Assistance Program (HPAP) will increase from?$80,000 to $202,000. This is the program that helps first-time homebuyers cover their down payment and closing costs.?So, if you are a household making below?50% of the Median Family Income, which is about $71,000 for a family of four, then starting October 1, you could be eligible to receive?up to $202,000 to help you buy a house. Even if you don't plan to use these programs yourself, help us spread the word so that we can help more of our neighbors become and stay homeowners in Washington, DC.

On Saturday, August 20, at 2:00 p.m., join Mayor Bowser at the 8th Annual Chuck Brown Day and back-to-school giveaway. Chuck Brown Day is a celebration of Brown?s life as well as the rich and original musical history of the District.

The event will feature performances by The Chuck Brown Band, Doug E. Fresh, Rare Essence, UCB, and more. Food trucks and vendors will be on site as well as a "Kid Fun Zone" with moon bounces. Attendees are recommended to bring a blanket or lawn chair for an afternoon of entertainment and fun.

Tuesday: Women's Equality Day Mixer
Women's Equality Day Mixer

On Tuesday, August 23, join Mayor Bowser, the Mayor?s Office on Women?s Policy and Initiatives (MOWPI), and the DC Commission for Women at Sandlot Anacostia for a celebration of Women?s Equality Day. This annual event?celebrates the day women were granted the right to vote (August 26, 1920), when the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was certified as law.

This year, MOWPI is partnering with ServeDC to share exciting opportunities for women to serve other women and girls in the District. The Mayor's Office of Talent and Appointments will also be on site to share opportunities to join local boards and commissions.

Host a High School Student through the Advanced Internship Program
Advanced Internship Program [ [link removed] ]

This week, Mayor?Bowser highlighted the District?s new Advanced Internship Program (AIP) and other programming that reimagines the high school experience and helps DC students build career-ready skills. The District is seeking employers to host high school interns this school year. Interested employers can?register here [ [link removed] ].

Launched this past spring, AIP is the District?s first school-year internship that places highly qualified high school juniors and seniors into opportunities that are specifically aligned to their Career and Technical Education programs of study and provides students both a wage and course credit. All students have completed at least two Career and Technical Education courses in the industry where they are being placed and are now interested in gaining work experience. Interns work 8-12 hours per week and are paid the minimum wage ($16.10) through funds provided by the Office of the State Superintendent for Education.
