Dear John,

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Health Affairs will host a Lunch and Learn event on August 30 for Insiders to discuss lessons learned about coverage expansion and future opportunities to sustain the program and improve children’s care.
Back To School Essentials
As we approach the end of August, many students interested in health services and health policy are heading back to school. In today’s newsletter, we highlight several Forefront articles about topics essential for these future policy makers and health care leaders to consider.

First, two articles from March 2022 examine the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ National Health Expenditure Projections.

Michael Chernew argues that policy changes are needed to improve the value of health care dollars that are spent, and George Miller and coauthors explain that the longest lasting financial impacts of the pandemic may be accelerations of shifts that were already underway.

Second, "Medicine’s Privileged Gatekeepers: Producing Harmful Ignorance About Racism And Health," by Nancy Krieger and coauthors, provides readers with a poignant analysis of how medical journals produce ignorance about racism.

Krieger and coauthors’ analysis demonstrates "striking evidence of the failure of leading medical journals to publish extant scientific research on racism and health" and that "the problem is not an absence of publishable work."

Aletha Maybank, one of the authors of the aforementioned article, also joined Vabren Watts, Health Affairs’ director of health equity, to interview Harriet Washington as part of the additional video content published with our theme issue on Racism & Health.

Finally, "Health-Related Litigation And The Supreme Court" Part I and Part II by Katie Keith give readers a crash course in recent Supreme Court decisions that affect health policy.

Understanding the impact of the court’s decisions is especially important now given the court’s six-to-three conservative majority, and you won't want to miss our health policy analysis as it's released.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs
Today in Health Affairs Forefront, Brian Blase asserts that policy makers must accept the economic reality of government health care programs: their spending trajectories are unsustainable and growing worse over time.
