Frontline communities are not bargaining chips. But that is exactly what they are being used as in Senators Manchin and Schumer's side deal aimed at fast-tracking permits for fossil fuel projects. This is unacceptable. Thankfully, we have the power to stop this dangerous deal in its tracks!
As part of the price to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, Senator Manchin is demanding Democratic leadership back a separate piece of legislation to expedite fossil fuel permitting.
If passed, this deal would gut bedrock environmental protections, threaten tribal sovereignty, endanger public health, fast-track fossil fuel pipelines and infrastructure, and push approval for Manchin’s pet project, the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
Manchin’s fossil fuel expansion deal is separate from the Inflation Reduction Act, which has already been passed and signed into law. That means we can still stop this dirty deal!
Yesterday, a protest took place outside Senator Schumer’s office in New York City. Activists including Food & Water Watch staff were arrested while protesting the dirty pipeline deal.
Frontline, low-income and communities of color have been used as sacrifice zones for Big Oil & Gas pipelines and power plants for far too long. This proposal — written by the fossil fuel industry — will further endanger these communities. That is why we need you to pressure your elected officials. Tell them we are watching and that they can – and must – block this deal.
To protect our communities and climate, we can't allow Senator Manchin and his fossil fuel industry backers to lock us into decades of more emissions that harm the planet and endanger our food, water and health.
Food & Water Watch and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Action, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
