YWCA Metropolitan Chicago is excited to share our 2022 Illinois KIDS COUNT policy brief, The Future of Child Well-Being in Illinois. This timely policy brief calls for equitable policy solutions to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and support all Illinois children and families to thrive in the next decade.

The brief weaves together data analysis and stories to present a current picture of Illinois’ child well-being and then use these findings to propose equitable policy and program solutions.

Here are some of the key findings:

  • Economic Security: 16% of children are living in poverty across Illinois, and Black children are 2X as likely to live in poverty

  • Education: 58% of residents live in a child care desert, which disproportionately impacts Latinx families and rural families

  • Health: 3% of children are uninsured in Illinois with Latinx children experiencing the highest uninsured rate
