Dear John,
I believe we are all created in the image of God and because of that belief, I am strongly pro-life. Being pro-life is more than just protecting the unborn…it means protecting women as well. I have voted for legislation that protects women’s health while also giving them the support necessary to face an unplanned pregnancy.
PREGNANCY CENTER RESOLUTION - H.Res. 389
I am a cosponsor of H.Res. 389, a bill recognizing the importance of pregnancy centers in the lives of men and women who may experience an unplanned pregnancy. These centers assist expecting mothers with pre-natal care, financial resources, and educational support. The bill calls for the first week of November to be designated as ‘National Pregnancy Center Week,’ celebrating the community effort it takes to raise a child.
TRIUMPH FOR NEW MOMS ACT - H.R. 4217
Research shows that mothers need support during their pregnancy, with one in five mothers suffering from a maternal mental health condition. These include postpartum depression, anxiety, and others. I cosponsored H.R. 4217 to establish a Task Force on Maternal Mental Health. Endorsed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, many universities and academic institutions see the effects that childbirth can have. I am so glad to support our mothers through this Task Force, and I hope that more research is done.
EARLY BREAST CANCER DETECTION THROUGH CANCER MOONSHOT
Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX-29) recently wrote a letter to President Biden regarding his Cancer Moonshot Program. She calls for accessibility to Multi-Cancer Early Detection tests (MCED), which are more accurate and less invasive than Mammograms. Breast cancer affects 1 in 5 women, with an estimated 43,550 women dying from the illness in 2022. This disease has also impacted me and my family. I lost my sister at a young age due to breast cancer, which is why I was eager to join Rep. Garcia’s letter. Through this bipartisan effort, we can fight for safer, comfortable, and efficient ways to screen women.
ACCESS TO CONTRACEPTION - H.R. 8421
Recently, I co-sponsored H.R. 8421, the Access to Safe Contraception Act of 2022. This bill protects access for men and women to FDA approved contraceptives, while also protecting religious freedoms and conscience practices for health care providers. As you may know, contraception is not only used as birth control, but for hormonal imbalances. This access is vital not only for prevention of unplanned pregnancies, but for women’s health.
