Training for HCBS and PCA workers and business owners: Employee-owned cooperatives, a workforce shortage strategy

The Disability Services Division, in partnership with community business experts, will offer two additional webinars in an effort to address the ongoing workforce shortage for home and community-based services (HCBS) and personal care assistance (PCA) services.

The webinars, scheduled for Sept. 14 and Oct. 4, will introduce the employee-owned cooperatives business model and resources. The information to be presented will be the same at both webinars. Interested parties may attend one or the other.

Review the DSD Webinar announcement [ [link removed] ] webpage for details and to register for the training. Email [email protected] if you have questions.

Training dates and times

Attend only one:

* 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14
* 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Description

Many direct care professionals love their work, but more than a third of them leave the profession every year because of low wages, lack of benefits or other factors. One way to give these professionals more say over their work environment is for them to become business partners through the employee-owned cooperatives model. Join DHS and community business experts to learn how to develop new, or transition existing businesses to, employee-owned cooperatives. We will share:

* Information about the business model
* Resources to help you make the change
* Information about grant opportunities.

Target audiences

* Direct care professionals of all types ? PCAs, DSPs, home health aides and all other professionals who support people with disabilities, older adults or people with mental health care needs.
* Retiring business owners who would like to transition their businesses to employee-owned cooperatives, instead of shutting down.
* University students who plan to enter health and human service professions or interested in starting a cooperative business or nonprofit.
* Other people interested in developing employee-owned health and human service cooperatives.
