Team,
Last week, I voted for the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) – a piece of legislation that will make critical investments in our economic and national security. It will save Michiganders money on everything from healthcare and prescription drugs to energy bills.
The passage of this bill, specifically lowering the cost of prescription drugs, is a full circle moment for me. The experience of my mom’s cancer diagnosis is what led me to first run for office, and even though she isn’t here to see this day – I know she’d be thrilled. I talked more about this at an event the other day – take a look here:

For a generation, the pharmaceutical industry has had a stranglehold on Congress. By passing this bill, our government is putting Michiganders' pocketbooks first. After years of talk, we are *finally* allowing Medicare to directly negotiate prescription drug prices – something I’ve been fighting for since I was first elected to Congress three-and-a-half years ago. The bill will also cap the amount of money Michigan seniors are paying out of pocket on prescription drugs to $2,000 dollars a year, and, the big one: starting in January 2023, the price of insulin will be capped at $35 per month for seniors on Medicare.
In addition to saving Michiganders thousands of dollars on prescription drugs – the IRA will also take steps to ensure America’s energy independence. The bill makes the largest ever investments in solar and wind energy so America is less reliant on countries halfway across the world for our energy – protecting us from price spikes at the gas pump. It also makes investments to address the extreme weather events that Michigan has experienced too frequently in the last few years. AND it will make sure America, not China, is leading the way on producing the next generation of vehicles with investments to bring electric vehicle supply chains back to the U.S. to create jobs with dignity for American workers.
The IRA does all of this without raising taxes on a single individual or small business, nor does it add to the national deficit. It’s fully paid for by taking the huge savings from Medicare negotiation and adding revenue raised by ensuring about 150 corporations that make over a billion dollars in profit finally pay a 15% minimum tax.
It’s taken longer than I would have liked to get here, but this landmark legislation actually takes on the special interests that have warped public policy in their narrow interest for too long, and it will drive down costs for Michiganders. Seeing this bill get over the finish line, and knowing the relief it will provide Michigan families, is why I wake up every morning to do this job. Onward!
