Autism Speaks hosts the Thought Leadership Summit on Autism and Aging

Autism Speaks recently hosted a virtual conference bringing together families, self-advocates, researchers and policymakers to discuss the issues facing autistic adults. Over two days of sessions, presenters shared the top challenges faced by adults on the spectrum, discussed policy considerations, provided an overview of the existing research and brainstormed ways to support this population going forward. Autism Speaks offers free webinars for the autism community

Last month, Autism Speaks began hosting a webinar series to ensure all people with autism have the resources they need to reach their full potential. In addition to focusing on facilitating information and resource sharing among service providers, sessions will cover topics including diagnosis, early intervention, inclusion and navigating adulthood. Being a catalyst for life-enhancing research breakthroughs

Autism Speaks celebrates investments in autism research and services

The U.S. House of Representatives, with the help of Autism Speaks advocacy efforts, marked an important milestone this July in advancing a bill to increase federal funding for autism research and services programs. It includes key investments in research on autism prevalence, disparities in diagnosis, access to services, transition to adulthood and the aging autism population. Read more.

Increasing early childhood screening and timely interventions

States advance better coverage for autism therapies

Autism Speaks works in states across the country to improve public and private health insurance coverage of medically necessary care for people with autism. Over the last two years, we’ve led the charge for the creation of a new benefit to serve thousands of Medicaid-enrolled children in Texas, New York and Illinois who previously did not have access to therapies such as applied behavior analysis (ABA). As of February 2022, all 50 states have implemented their Medicaid autism services benefit. Read more.

In last month’s Adulting on the Spectrum podcasts, hosts Andrew Komarow and Eileen Lamb spoke with Rebecca and Joy. Rebecca was diagnosed with autism at age 23 and went through a neurodiverse hiring program to find her job at a large financial institution as a project management officer. Joy is an autistic writer with a particular interest in constructed language, video games and Pokémon. View more on our Youtube page.
