Missy's journey to family

Help Farm Sanctuary rescue and care for pigs like Missy.

From the moment Missy pig arrived at Farm Sanctuary, it was clear she knew she was home. As she entered her new barn, Missy stretched out to relax in the straw and accepted belly rubs from her new friends!

It's astounding to think that this sweet pig was originally bought for breeding - and that her piglets would have been slaughtered for meat.

But Missy had other plans! Naturally curious, she spent her days finding new ways to escape her solitary pen. Eventually, Missy's owner decided she was too difficult to keep
around and planned to send her to slaughter.

Luckily for Missy, a sympathetic neighbor stepped in just in time - agreeing to give Missy a temporary home if Farm Sanctuary could help with permanent placement. However, the process took longer than we hoped: Rehoming adult pigs is difficult due to their size, healthcare needs, and temperament. And in the meantime, Missy continued breaking out of her enclosure.

Fearing Missy would be hurt or dig through a neighbor's property, her foster parents felt they had no choice but to resume plans to send Missy to slaughter. We knew we had to act fast to save Missy's life - and that's exactly what we did.

Kindhearted support from friends like you makes all the difference for Missy and others at risk. Please help us continue to rescue, care for, and advocate on behalf of pigs like
her by making a generous contribution today.

Our dedicated team worked tirelessly to make space for Missy - moving animals around and scrubbing and spreading clean straw in a newly vacant barn. Originally, we planned to continue the search for a home through our Farm Animal Adoption Network; but in the end we decided to make Missy a permanent resident at Farm Sanctuary.

With our members' kind support, we took care of Missy's veterinary needs. We gave her pain medication to soothe her sore legs - a side effect of living without proper space for so long - and scheduled her spay surgery. Reproductive cancers are common in pigs, so the surgery could improve and prolong Missy's life. And, as we don't breed animals at Farm Sanctuary, Missy would never be used as a "breeding sow" again.

Missy's life began in solitude, but thanks to caring friends like you, she will spend the rest of her days in a sanctuary community with her pig friends - and an endless supply of belly rubs from us!

Like all of the lifesaving work we do at Farm Sanctuary, successful rescues like Missy's depend on the support of generous members like you. That's why we hope you'll make a gift today to support Missy's ongoing care, and to ensure that vulnerable farm animals like her receive the lifelong care, love, and affection they deserve.

P.S. Pigs like Missy are often seen as a means of production - not as the unique individuals they are. By making a generous gift today, you can help us ensure that other neglected and abused farm animals will get the chance to live and simply be themselves.
