We know anti-democratic activists have a systematic process to suppress voting rights, deny election results, and push unfair maps. Since the 2020 election, they’ve taken numerous steps to undermine the foundations of American democracy.

But we have a system to counter them.

So, let’s lay out their system:

First, they denied the results of the 2020 election. In states like Pennsylvania and Arizona, which were fairly decided, far-right legislators cast doubt on the results. Violent mobs stormed the Capitol for this senseless cause.

Then, many state legislatures passed voter suppression laws. These include criminalizing giving food and water to voters waiting in long lines, restrictions on mail-in voting, and limiting the number of ballot drop boxes. Unsurprisingly, these laws have disproportionately affected communities of color.

Now, some Republicans are supporting the “independent state legislature” theory in Moore v. Harper. If the theory prevails, state legislatures will be even more empowered to pass gerrymandered and unfair maps as many checks on fair redistricting will be removed.

In the future, the far-right may deny the results of the 2022 midterm elections when they lose. They could continue to pass voter suppression legislation aimed at communities of color. And we fear they’ll become more violent as time passes.
