Dear John,
Earlier this week, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act. The
law demonstrates that Congress CAN pass legislation whenever it wants to
act.
That’s why we must keep the pressure on Congress to pass the Martha Wright
Act, legislation that will give the Federal Communications Commission
greater authority to regulate predatory prison and jail telecom
corporations. The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee
passed the bill out of committee back in March of this year, via unanimous
consent, taking us a step closer to having it pass the full Senate.
We believe that if we can get more members of congress to cosponsor the
bill, House leadership will feel pressure to call a floor vote.
[ [link removed] ]John, we need representatives to act and get this
legislation through the House. Call your member of Congress now and demand
that they pass this bill!
[ [link removed] ]CALL YOUR REP: FIGHT TO KEEP FAMILIES CONNECTED
For years, Color Of Change and our partners have pushed Congress to pass
this legislation. Prison phone corporations charge as much as $1 a minute
for a 15-minute phone call between an incarcerated person and their loved
ones. They are extracting wealth from Black families, and forcing some to
choose between putting food on the table and staying connected with a
loved one behind bars. That is cruel.
Thanks to pressure from Color Of Change members like you, and the hard
work from phone justice organizers, the bill already has 34 co-sponsors in
the House, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), chair of the
Congressional Progressive Caucus. John, we have to keep up the
pressure to pass this bill.
[ [link removed] ]John, this is why we need your help in urging the U.S. House
of Representatives to pass this phone justice bill.
But time is short: September is the last time the House will be in session
before the November elections, and families are continuing to suffer
financially at the hands of predatory telecom corporations. The time to
act is NOW. It’s important that you call your member of Congress today.
[ [link removed] ]John, the House will come back in session in September, so
the next few weeks are make or break for this phone justice bill. Tell
your congressional representative to pass this phone justice bill and keep
families connected.

FOR PHONE JUSTICE
We’ll keep fighting for phone justice so families can stay connected. We
hope you will join us in this fight.
Until Justice Is Real,
Sakira Cook, Co-Interim Vice President
