It’s the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment – guaranteeing the right to vote for American women.
Women for centuries have fought to have their voices be heard and the work continued after ratification to include women of color in this fundamental process. No matter how long it takes, the importance of voting and using our voice cannot be denied.
But we have a problem on our hands. Right now Republicans are hellbent on reversing this progress and not only have they refused to protect voting rights, but state legislatures across the country have already passed heinous voter restriction laws.
Within this year alone, six states have passed nine election interference laws. These laws are made to increase partisanship and threaten the people and processes that make elections work. It’s clear that the integrity of our voting system is being threatened.
Suzan has been a longtime fighter for voting rights. Also just within this year, she has voted twice, to pass voting rights legislation in the House.
The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act would preserve our right to vote by expanding voting access, including vote-by-mail, eliminating discriminatory voter roll purges, and making Election Day a federal holiday.
We need leaders like Suzan in Congress to pass important voting rights protections at a time when Republicans around the country are ready to strip them away.
