John,
Corporate Democrats in Congress sacrificed marginalized people for profit yet again, by including massive handouts to the fossil fuel industry in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Black, brown, and Indigenous communities near fossil fuel projects have endured toxic pollution for far too long already. Now, this new bill will expand oil and gas leasing in previously protected areas.
After being used as a bargaining chip, environmental justice advocates have renewed calls for President Biden to use his executive authority to protect their lives and block fossil fuels.
Please sign if you agree: We cannot sacrifice communities for profit. President Biden must take the lead from people on the frontlines of the climate crisis, who are demanding that he immediately declare a National Climate Emergency and start phasing out fossil fuels.
For generations, Black and brown people in my community have been forced to live alongside dangerous fossil fuel projects due to our federal government’s racist housing laws.
Communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis, like mine, have been leading the fight against corporate polluters and for environmental justice. They’ve endured significant harm, including debilitating/fatal illnesses from toxic pollution—all while people in power continue to treat them as expendable.
Enough is enough. We cannot allow this environmental racism to continue.
Our federal government must center and act in solidarity with people at the frontlines of the climate crisis, rather than treat these communities as sacrifice zones for fossil fuels. Please sign if you agree.
I’m fighting alongside grassroots environmental justice coalitions to defeat a new “side deal” from Senator Manchin and his polluting donors.
This so-called “permitting reform” bill would drastically expand and fast-track dirty fossil fuel projects like pipelines. It would gut bedrock environmental laws and further take away power from local communities to fight these projects.
Unsurprisingly, this “side deal” was proposed and drafted by the American Petroleum Institute, which represents the fossil fuel industry.
Clearly, we must keep fighting this outrageous corporate influence in politics. And we must end our government’s racist legacy of concentrating pollution in Black, brown, Indigenous, and low-wealth communities.
Please sign now to join communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis and demand President Biden declare a National Climate Emergency.
Within Congress, I promise I will keep urging President Biden to act with his full authority to fight climate changes and fossil fuel development.
I will continue to fight against Senator Manchin’s fossil fuel giveaways and the not-yet-introduced “side deal” between Manchin and Democratic leadership.
I will keep pushing for our right to clean air and clean water, including by fighting for the funding needed to fully replace our country’s lead pipes—which we’ve passed in the House but not the Senate.
I will fight for legislation like the Environmental Justice For All Act, which would empower vulnerable communities by regulating cumulative impacts and restoring civil rights protections.
And I will continue to bring members of Congress to my district to connect with people on the ground, and otherwise elevate the voices of frontline communities, so that people in power better understand the need to move with urgency. We have no time to wait.
In service and solidarity,
Rashida
