I left Wyoming as soon as I was old enough because I knew I was neither safe nor respected as a queer Mexican progressive. It was hard to leave home, but it would have been catastrophic to stay. I worry, now more than ever, about people like me who are still there. I haven’t been a resident of Wyoming for years, although my family still lives there. At first, every time I went home to visit, I’d take a big deep breath in as I drove down US 85 (also known as the Gun Barrel) toward home and finally exhaled when it was in my rear-view. Over the years, a lot did get better (thanks Obama!), but I was there recently, and friends, it felt more unsafe than ever.
The truth is that proud boys have more power than any progressive in Wyoming.
