Serving the community where I grew up has been the honor of my life. From my time on New York’s city council to my time in Congress, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing me to represent my home.

I am the proud daughter of two Jamaican immigrants, and my mother, Dr. Una Clarke, taught me what service looked like as I watched her fight for our community on city council. She truly taught me from a young age about the importance of grassroots politics and building coalitions to serve the people.
I eventually went on to succeed my mother as representative of the 40th district where I sponsored resolutions that opposed the Iraq war, called to end the death penalty, and uplifted women and immigrants out from poverty. Fighting poverty was and continues to be one of my primary goals as your representative.
I’m the co-chair of the Congressional Caribbean Caucus and it’s there that I’ve fought for the Haitian diaspora and against violence at the border – particularly during the Trump administration.
I introduced the Dream and Promise Act which gave 2.5 million DREAMers temporary protected status and continues to be a champion for immigrants, women, and people everywhere.
And I believe my voice and my experience are even more important than ever before. Extremism and white supremacy are on the rise, and as the daughter of immigrants, a proud native New Yorker, and the only Black woman to represent New York in Congress, I’m more focused than ever on the work ahead of us.
I’m not just focused on New York, but fighting poverty and inequality across the country. From addressing the maternal death rate for Black women to investing in clean water for our children to fighting for DREAMers, I promise you that I’m always going to put people before politics.
