John,

The Republican candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania was, as stated by CNN, “a central player supporting former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election,” as well as a participant in the January 6 attack. He even breached police lines on camera, lied about it, and got caught by journalists.

Then, after being subpoenaed by the January 6 Committee, he refused to answer a single question and walked out after less than 15 minutes.

John, we deserve the truth from our elected officials and the candidates who want to represent our communities. Particularly when it comes to their efforts to destroy our democracy by blatantly overturning an election because they didn’t like the results. Will you chip in $10 today to help us defend our democracy from this and every future threat by expanding the electorate to include historically disenfranchised communities of color, immigrant communities and the youth?

Remember, the governor chooses the Secretary of State, which is important because the Secretary of State oversees and guides how elections are managed and certifies the final results.

We already have counties refusing to certify results, ignoring the courts, and working to disenfranchise voters. It’s easy to see how much worse that could get under an anti-democratic Secretary of State who shares their views.

Let’s not forget, the governor will be in charge of certifying the winner of Pennsylvania’s 2024 presidential election. That’s a dangerous power to give a candidate who already attempted to reject the winner of the 2020 election and push alternate electors.

Those are all things he could do on his own. If he wins and Republicans remain in control of the state legislature, he can also enact a heap of the extremist bills he promised his base. Just two would sabotage our democracy by repealing no-excuse mail-in voting and strip our rights of bodily autonomy by totally banning abortion without exceptions.

John, every election is important. But Republicans can’t hide their intent for this to be our last free or fair election — their chosen candidate for governor directly and publicly tried to overturn the 2020 election. His shameful refusal to answer the January 6 Committee’s questions suggests his public actions aren’t even the end of it. Either way, we must do everything we can to mobilize for THIS election. Will you donate $10 right now to help us register voters in the communities we center across the Commonwealth?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in under-represented communities of color and immigrant communities. We will register them to vote, provide education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize people to vote in every election.
