Colleagues and Friends,
We continue to face an ongoing onslaught of consequential news stories, with no end in sight. In such an environment, it is difficult to have time to reflect upon the latest revelations, make sense of them, and consider what can be done.
As an organization with limited resources and reliance on volunteer energy and commitment, we read these stories with a singular focus on how we can make a difference toward one big-picture goal: Preserving American democracy and the rule of law.
To that end, last Friday LDAD joined with States United Democracy Center and 50 lawyers and former officials in filing a detailed letter before the D.C. Office of Disciplinary Counsel, urging that John Eastman be held accountable for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. This work on lawyer accountability has been a core element of LDAD’s attention since its inception. Each of our complaints has been the result of painstaking research and been supported by prominent lawyers.
Other projects to protect our democracy include our Democracy Commitment, calls to action, statements and many opinion pieces, which use the power of our voice to shine a light on the dangers we face at this time in our history. We are also working on several special projects focused on needed institutional reforms.
A generous benefactor, Boston attorney Barbara Schmitt, has offered a matching gift of $40,000 to ensure LDAD can continue its critical work. We are deeply grateful for this demonstration of support and ask that all of you help us match this gift by September 10.
We hope we can count on your help and as always, hope to hear from you.
