We fund voter protection John, this really important news coming out of Tallahassee, Florida shows that this fight for voting rights isn’t about political parties — it’s about our democracy and our voters. A judge in Florida just rejected a redistricting map that scattered 370,000 Black voters in North Florida across four different congressional districts and, in the process, eliminated a minority congressional district. One commentator called the map “darn close to the most egregiously partisan map in the country.” Republicans tried to diminish Black voters’ impact and they lost. Incredibly, the judge who struck down the map is Judge J. Layne Smith – a judge appointed by Republican governor Ron DeSantis. This is part of a broader trend in Florida. As Judge Walker recently recognized, when he struck down portions of Florida’s voter suppression law, “Florida has repeatedly sought to make voting tougher for Black voters.” It’s up to us to ensure that Black voters’ voices are heard. We have seen first hand that barriers to voting are designed to disenfranchise voters of color. This is exactly why we’re working so hard to defend voting rights. Our mission is to fund and support permanent, year-round voter protection teams who can work to dismantle barriers to voting and ensure that every voter can have their voice heard in our democracy.
As judges and leaders across the country start to take a stand on this key issue, we need to be sure we’re ready to stand up beside them. Thank you for supporting our work today, Power the Vote
