Pension funds, globally, have hundreds of billions invested, in fossil fuel holdings. These investments provide the funding to develop massive fossil fuel infrastructure. Today, over 1,400 institutions have fossil fuel divestment policies in place – yet, not a single major U.S. healthcare institution is among them.
There are some 1,200 private hospital systems in the U.S., each with varying amounts of funds invested in oil, coal, or gas holdings. It’s absurd, and entirely hypocritical, for healthcare institutions to continue to make these investment choices. Hospitals divested from tobacco in the ‘90s, and they can – and must – divest from fossil fuels today.
