John,

In response to the growing climate crisis, the National Academy of Medicine has called on health sector institutions to take greater responsibility for reducing greenhouse gas emissions – calling it the core of the crisis. That’s all well and good, except it does not address one of the root causes of the crisis at the source: the BILLIONS of dollars continuing to be invested into fossil fuel holdings by the health sector’s large private institutions’ pension and retirement funds.

The urgency of the climate crisis, the implications for global public health and equity, and the health sector’s singularly unique responsibilities towards our health demands a response from the health sector that directly addresses this root cause.

In order to address this blatant contradiction and confront the major health impacts caused by climate change, we are demanding the National Academy of Medicine call upon healthcare institutions to divest from fossil fuels.

Pension funds, globally, have hundreds of billions invested, in fossil fuel holdings. These investments provide the funding to develop massive fossil fuel infrastructure. Today, over 1,400 institutions have fossil fuel divestment policies in place – yet, not a single major U.S. healthcare institution is among them.

There are some 1,200 private hospital systems in the U.S., each with varying amounts of funds invested in oil, coal, or gas holdings. It’s absurd, and entirely hypocritical, for healthcare institutions to continue to make these investment choices. Hospitals divested from tobacco in the ‘90s, and they can – and must – divest from fossil fuels today.

Sign and send the petition: Demand the the National Academy of Medicine issue a public statement supporting fossil fuel divestment in the healthcare sector.

Thank you for being in this fight with us,

Cliff
