Team,
7 years ago today, twenty children and six adults lost their lives in Newtown, Conn. at Sandy Hook Elementary School - and a community was irrevocably changed.
Sandy Hook was an incredible tragedy that we all said must never be repeated. Congress owed the victims action. And yet, over 2,000 mass shootings have occurred in the United States since that fateful day in 2012.
This year, the House of Representatives has passed meaningful gun reform legislation in H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act to require a background check for every firearm sale, and H.R. 1112, to close the Charleston loophole - yet the Senate has refused to act and both pieces of legislation are languishing in Mitch McConnell's graveyard.
I was a founding member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns as mayor of Providence. As a member of Congress, I have taken on the powerful gun lobby and introduced the Assault Weapons Ban to prohibit the production and purchase of new assault-style weapons that are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible.
I have been in this fight for a long time, and I won't be giving it up any time soon. As we mark this solemn anniversary, I am more hopeful than ever before that change is coming.
Together, we will continue that fight every single day, from the halls of Congress to the streets of our communities. We will never give up, with so many lives at stake.
