The past few weeks, GLAAD has been on-the-ground, advising on
social media, hosting events and reaching supporters like you. Get
caught up on everything the organization has been doing below.
GLAAD and more than 50 other pro-LGBTQ organizations organized an
open
letter detailing the effects of false Facebook ads regarding PrEP,
a drug that protects against HIV. Law firms have created targeted ads
on Facebook and Instagram which state the medication is not safe,
therefore putting high risk populations at greater risk.
In an article
in The Washington Post, health officials detail the harm
that the ads have caused and the responses from patients who have
become wrongfully fearful of taking PrEP. GLAAD and the co-signers of
the letter have called on Facebook to remove the ads on its platforms
and to update its advertising policies to prevent misinformation.
“Facebook’s refusal to take action on ads that target at-risk
community members with false medical information points to a much
larger problem for Facebook users and an urgent need for LGBTQ safety
to be prioritized across their products,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, the
President and CEO of GLAAD.
