Friend,
The latest headlines out of Louisiana, Florida, and Michigan are undoubtedly brutal.
- A Louisiana patient may be forced to carry a fetus without a skull to full term and delivery
- A Florida teen is being forced to give birth against their will, as a court found her not to be ‘mature enough’ to get an abortion
- Rogue prosecutors in Michigan are trying to enforce a 91-year-old law banning abortion
These stories are egregious, but they are exactly why we focus on crucial areas most hostile to reproductive freedom, coaching, supporting, and electing prochoice champions who will fight back where it matters most.
These #VOTEPROCHOICE candidates from over the years bring us so much hope. Take two minutes to learn about them, and you’ll see why we’re urgently doubling down our fight:
In Louisiana –
-
LaToya Cantrell (New Orleans Mayor) said that New Orleans is a safe haven for all in Louisiana, and that the city is also working to make available tools, educational resources, and emergency contraceptives in every public space, like libraries, and that she was proud that city officials would not be prioritizing the enforcement of abortion laws in the city.
-
Mandie Landry (Louisiana State House of Representatives - District 91) knows that no one has the right to tell anyone else what to do with their body. And she is fighting against the extreme bills passed by the legislature, including the prohibition of abortion even in cases of rape and incest, which are dangerous to health and well-being. Louisiana needs advocates like Rep. Landry more than ever.
In Florida –
-
Allison Miller (candidate for Florida State Attorney) pledged that "As State Attorney, I am never going to prosecute a woman who has an abortion or a medical provider who does what is in his or her patient's physical or mental best interest, and that includes an abortion."
-
Aramis Ayala (candidate for Florida State Attorney General) "I am running for Attorney General to protect the right to access safe abortion. The right to abortion access is fundamental to our humanity and recognition as human beings."
In Michigan –
-
Reggie Miller (candidate for Michigan State House - District 31) “I will loudly advocate for access to safe and affordable abortions and will support any legislation that protects a [person’s] right to abortion.”
-
Annie Somerville (candidate for Michigan Washtenaw County Commission) “As a city council member, I opposed funding a "crisis pregnancy center." As county commissioner, I will fight every day to expand access to reproductive healthcare in Washtenaw County.”
