In Liz Cheney's concession speech last night, she warned "We have candidates for Secretary of State who may refuse to report the actual results of the popular vote in future elections."
She added, "No American should support election deniers for any position of genuine responsibility, where their refusal to follow the rule of law will corrupt our future.”
A Washington Post analysis backs up Cheney's concern, concluding: "Election deniers are marching toward power in key 2024 battlegrounds."
CNN agrees as well, warning that "The distinct possibility that some of these secretaries will be people with a history of election denial is a major challenge for American democracy."
The consequences of what's at stake are profound -- even in the immediate aftermath of the 2024 election. The Washington Post reports, "A close presidential contest that comes down to the outcome in states where officials are willing to try to thwart the popular will could throw the country into chaos" and "sow the seeds of civil strife on a scale even greater than what the nation saw on Jan. 6, 2021."
Campaigns for secretary of state often fly under the radar. But this year, Democrats cannot afford to ignore these races --and the candidates for these crucial positions need our support.
