This week, the House finally moved forward on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). This is long overdue but very welcome news. I’m glad a deal has finally been reached. USMCA will be a significant win for farmers, workers and all Americans. Renegotiating NAFTA was a central campaign promise made by President Trump. He kept his word and Americans will enjoy the many benefits of this upgraded trade deal as a result.
The Justice Department Inspector General confirmed what I had long suspected: The FBI abused its power when it spied on the Trump campaign in 2016. Anyone who values fundamental civil liberties should be terrified by this behavior. I began raising questions about the FBI’s reliance on anti-Trump dossier author Christopher Steele immediately after revelations of his involvement with the FBI’s Russia probe. We now know that the FBI failed to disclose Steele’s credibility problems and political motivations when seeking secret spying authority based largely on his uncorroborated reports, which were funded by the Clinton campaign and Democratic Party. The FBI’s job is to protect Americans, our democracy and our rights. Its actions have done great harm to the public trust and jeopardize the important work that rank-and-file agents do every day for our nation. Read my full statement here and watch my floor speech on the report here.
As part of my work with veterans across the state, my office recently interviewed veterans at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown to document their service as part of the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project. Established by Congress in 2000, the Veterans History Project collects, preserves and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. This week, I delivered 11 Iowa veterans' stories to be part of the project. I want to thank all our veterans who have sacrificed in defense of our freedoms. Their service ensures that all Americans will live in peace and prosperity for generations to come.
