John,

There are more than 100 candidates currently running for office who openly peddle the “Big Lie” conspiracy theory that the 2020 Presidential election was stolen.

That conspiracy theory has been used to justify a nationwide, systematic attempt to manipulate the electoral process against the majority, with GOP-controlled legislatures passing voter suppression laws to make it more difficult for Black and other minority voters to exercise their right to vote!

Now, as we celebrate the 57th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that banned racial discrimination in voting, we need Congress to take action, NOW, to protect our voting rights – and the Senate, in turn, should get rid of the filibuster in order to get it done.

Over the last decade, the increasingly-conservative Supreme Court has chipped away at the protections of the Voting Rights Act, paving the way for extremist legislators to enforce racial gerrymanders and other hurdles to voting.

Next term, the Court will hear arguments in an Alabama case that explicitly targets the Voting Rights Act and the fundamental right of ALL Americans to vote.

I have worked for years to advance voting rights in Illinois and nationwide. We know that the restrictive voting laws passed in GOP-controlled states across the country don’t just hinder the electoral process in those states, but in fact injure democracy for all of us.

Voter protections are the bedrock of any democratic society. Without them, our democracy cannot stand.

That’s why I’m asking you to join me in calling on the Senate to eliminate the filibuster in order to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. [[link removed]]

I am proud that Illinois has passed some of the most inclusive voting laws in this country – from provisions for early voting and automatic voter registration to reinstatement of voting rights after time served in prison and jail. In fact, applications to vote by mail in the November 8 General Election are already open to registered Illinois voters.

It is long past time we secured some of the same voter protections nationwide.

Thank you for making your voice heard to preserve our democracy,

Jonathan
