Accelerated Approval Of Cancer Drugs

The Food and Drug Administration offers an accelerated approval process
for drugs that treat life-threatening conditions, including cancer.

In a paper released ahead-of-print today, Richard Frank and coauthors
examine a subset of these drugs covered by Medicare Part B
.

They find that drugs that complete the accelerated approval process and
positive confirmatory trials, indicating efficacy, do not experience
commensurate increases in prices.

"Regardless of the statistical model, there was no systematic
relationship between price and obtaining a positive confirmatory trial
during the study period," the authors write.

Frank and coauthors argue that this lack of incentive indicates a market
failure. Their results demonstrate that there are few economic payoffs
to undertaking costly activities such as confirmatory trials.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs

Today in Health Affairs Forefront, Donald Crane and George Halvorson
propose two paths for policy makers

working on Medicare reform.

Sumit Agarwal and coauthors write that the elimination of cost sharing
for vaccines in Medicare

in the Inflation Reduction Act is long overdue, but it could still fall
short of substantially improving access and equity.
