Turning Point!

A message from Lauren Hernandez,
Chair, EDC Democratic Party

Hello John,

The past two weeks have been a turning point for the American people, because of the Biden Administration’s work to aggressively prioritize delivering tangible results to hardworking people.

Local & regional results:

The Mountain Democrat reported that U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the department is investing more than $40 million to provide access to high-speed internet for rural residents and businesses in California, part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to investing in rural infrastructure and affordable high-speed internet for all. Locally, a loan of more than $28 million in federal funds has been awarded to the Volcano Telephone Company. This rural development investment will be used to help them deploy a fiber-to-the-home network connecting 5,191 people, 119 businesses, seven educational facilities and 15 farms in Alpine, Amador, Calavares and El Dorado counties!

National Highlights include:

  • Yesterday (8/16), President Biden signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act, a groundbreaking bill for the American people that will combat climate change, lower the cost of prescription drugs, extend health care coverage while reducing the deficit by making the wealthest corporations pay their fair share.
  • Last Wednesday, the Labor Department announced that the month-to-month increase in inflation between June and July was effectively 0%, indicating that inflation may have peaked.
  • Average gasoline prices have dropped by $1.00 per gallon in the last 60 days.
  • President Biden signed the PACT Act last Wednesday, a new law that expands VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances.
  • Last week, Biden signed protocols admitting Sweden and Finland into NATO
  • Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released a stunning jobs report that showed a gain of 528,000 jobs, more than doubling the gains that forecasters had predicted. The U.S. labor market has officially recovered all 22 million jobs lost in the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The July jobless rate of 3.5% matched the half-century low.

That is a lot of good news packed into the past two weeks. President Biden and the Democratic Party's recent string of successes are real and permanent. In your own way, preferably in your own words, I hope that you'll tell friends, neighbors, and complete strangers about the ways Democratic Party policies are materializing into positive outcomes for all of us. Feel free to cut and paste the bulleted items whenever and wherever possible (no attribution necessary or requested).

Together, we are making El Dorado County a better place for all of us. I hope you'll share the good news!

Lauren Hernandez, Chair,
El Dorado County Democratic Party
