Dear Jack:
I’d like your opinion.
Since President Biden took office, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported over 3.1 million encounters with illegal immigrants at our Southwest border. Due to the increased foot traffic, it's much more strenuous for Border Patrol agents to prevent criminals and other bad actors from entering the United States. Thus, more deadly drugs make their way into the country, which poses a threat to the well-being of our communities.
This past April, May, and June, about 3,115 pounds of fentanyl was seized at the border, which is more than the total amount seized in all of Fiscal Year 2019 and equivalent to over 750,000,000 lethal doses, which is enough to kill the entire American population, twice. If we are serious about protecting the health and safety of all Americans, guarding against the stream of fentanyl and other illicit drugs pouring into our communities by way of the Cartels is of paramount importance.
As fentanyl is now the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45, I'm eager to hear your input regarding the drug overdose crisis facing our nation.
