John,
We just got a set of Secret Service emails that shows the agency knew all about the threat of violence on January 6th, and didn’t take the warnings seriously.
The documents show that the Secret Service received multiple, clear warnings of the violence bound for D.C. on January 6th. Not only does the agency appear to have failed to take the threats seriously—it also failed to pass along a threat against Nancy Pelosi for two days until hours after the Capitol was breached.
Read our two new investigations about the Secret Service ignoring the impending danger on January 6th, and failing to notify Capitol Police about the threat against Pelosi until after the attack.
We’re finally getting a clearer picture of what was happening in the days leading up to the insurrection, and we won’t stop investigating the shortcomings of the Secret Service and other federal law enforcement agencies. When a law enforcement agency fails to respond adequately to potential threats, it can have devastating consequences—like we saw on January 6th.
CREW’s legal actions pursuing government records have uncovered key details about January 6th and how the federal government failed to prepare. The public needs the full picture, and we’re going to keep pushing for an answer to why the Secret Service and the rest of federal law enforcement failed to adequately prepare for the possibility of violence, with deadly consequences.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
