Dear john,
Yesterday, the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into a law. This historic legislation will cap insulin prices at $35 a month and lower prescription drug prices for seniors. It will also lower Affordable Health Care Act premiums for millions of Americans.
This historic law puts America on track to remain atop the global stage for generations to come.

I announced the arrival of equipment from Arizona to dredge Falcon Lake and ensure better water access as soon as possible. With the ongoing drought putting the water supply of Zapata County residents at risk, it is imperative that this is resolved. Now that Falcon Lake is at historically low water levels, we must act now.

I announced that I secured $2 million in federal community project funding for the Rio Grande International Study and the City of Laredo to restore part of the Rio Grande River. This will help maintain drinking water security, betters the environment, helps Border Patrol to keep our communities safe, and protects local species. The project will also combat invasive species which harm the river, as an invasive salt cedar can drink 200 gallons of river water a day!

I announced that I secured $7,430,385 from the Department of Transportation’s Low or No Emissions Bus and Bus Facilities program for the City of Laredo and Laredo Transit Management Inc. This is in addition to the $5 million El Metro received in April of this year, due to my vote for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

I announced that I secured $6,803,772 for South Texas College to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds will allow South Texas College to give emergency grants for students to cover costs associated with the pandemic, including living expenses, tuition, and mental health care. South Texas students should focus on continuing their education and not the impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

I attended the August meeting of the Northeast Partnership, a group of 13 member cities in Bexar and Guadalupe counties. The monthly meetings are to share developments and find common interests where the cities can work together with local, state, and federal officials.

My family and I attended the Presidential Investiture Ceremony welcoming Dr. Minita Ramirez at Laredo College. Thank you to the Laredo College leadership and local officials for your remarks and service to our community. My wife, Imelda, my daughters, Christina and Catherine, and I send our best to Dr. Ramirez as she leads our students and continues advocating for the pursuit of knowledge. Congratulations!

I announced that I delivered $9,955,285.46 in federal funding to reimburse summer meals for 3,500 children in Starr County, according to Texas Department of Agriculture data. This program provides nutritionally balanced, free breakfasts and lunches to children, ensuring they have the healthy diet needed to learn and grow.

I received a memento from the White House for my support of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This bipartisan bill addresses gun tragedies through investments in mental health, school safety, and common-sense gun measures. It does NOT target law-abiding citizens and their right to bear arms.

I visited Henry Cuellar Elementary School in Laredo to check in with students and teachers at the beginning of the school year. I donated backpacks filled with school supplies so students can start the year knowing they have everything that they need. I’m confident that the teachers at the school are shaping these young minds to be curious, kind, and hard-working!

I joined the Roma Police Department and City of Roma officials to discuss law enforcement in Starr County and what they need to be successful. South Texas has one of the highest concentrations of local, state, and federal law enforcement in the country. I toured their facility to see how the Roma Police Department operates and what I can do to make them even more effective.
