A great day Saturday 11 June where the Victoria Resident Association celebrated the planting of six trees to improve the environment in the area.
A speech was given by Tree Surgeon Alex Begg on the numerous benefits improving the environment can have on the social, communal and architectural benefits to St Ann’s. Residents opted to take responsibility to own a tree and look after that tree.
The ceremony was followed by a walk around the immediate area to discuss how to make nature thrive, followed by a litter pick and a communal picnic.
We've been improving the area of St Ann’s through engagement and consultation by inviting residents to have their say at local issue meetings have gone down really well.
Councillors have held four meetings with residents in 6 months around the new local housing proposal The Oakdene Project. Residents have been really engaged and have put forward a suggested name for this project.
Nottingham City Homes have lately been working with the council to fund a local community artist to paint a mural on the hording, working with the local residents including children from the Huntingdon Academy primary school and Metropolitan Housing Association tenants to promote positive messages and images. The resulting mural is beautiful and really cheers up our community.
Ward Councillors are listening to community concerns on the potential closure of Victoria Centre market. Councillor Corall Jenkins met with a few store holders and collected a 7000 strong petition. The petition will be handed in at Full Council in September.
Your local Councillors recently held a Ward Walk with colleagues in Nottinghamshire Police, our Community Protection teams and our Public Realm and waste teams.
Thanks to all the partners who took part, and all the residents on Devon Street and Spalding Road who had great feedback and spoke to us about some of the issues they have, which we'll be taking away to hopefully solve!
Local residents took part through the online survey and we went to Blue Bell Hill Primary and met with the whole school council (all years of the school), which was 17 students in total.
We discussed a range of topics including:
- What their ideal play park would include equipment wise
- What they’d like to see non-play equipment wise, eg. benches/bins/info boards
- What other parks in the city they like to use and why
- What themes they’d find fun (the current theme for Marmion is space)
- What stops them using play spaces/feeling safe (at Marmion and in general)
This information will help to determine what equipment would be best installed on the site and also steer potential for themes/educational/fact boards on the site.
We have £25K in Section 106 money and received a further £10,000 in external funding from FCC, to pay for new equipment, surfacing and associated works.
Residents were pleased and the campaigning session that followed was so inclusive.
Drop-in surgeries with your local Councillors take place regularly, why not come along to ask a question or share an idea on how to make St Ann's a better place to live.
- 1st Saturday of the month, 10-11am at St Ann’s Valley Centre, Wells Rd.
- 1st Wednesday of the month 6-7pm Cherry Lodge on King Edwards Park, Carlton Rd
